Planting trees
YOKE organises Vanamahotsava every year to inculcate the importance of growing trees and plants in the villages and around. As part of this agenda, several initiatives have been undertaken to increase the greenery on the river bank and on the road sides. In the last decade, out of 300 saplings planted on the river bank, village roads and the state highway, 50 have grown well to provide shade, house birds, and add vibrant colour to the landscape.

Cleaning water-bodies
Regular cleaning of tanks and ponds as a community initiative has been undertaken in association with Environmentalist Foundation of India.

River water quality
The quality of Tamraparni river water is monitored on a monthly basis for dissolved oxygen, pH value and sulphate, chloride and phosphate. The testing instruments and reagents have been provided by Hach Inc.

Maintaining a clean environment
YOKE works with local schools and colleges on their NSS programmes to maintain a clean village panchayat. The teams clean up the river bank and take care of the saplings.

River bank maintenance
YOKE actively participates in all initiatives to keep the river bank clean. The Nellai Neervalam project initiated by the District administration, was taken up in our village. A temple nandavanam project on the river bank was also coordinated with ATREE, another NGO specialising in environmental conservation.
